Coming off of their biggest year yet in 2024, Western Australia's Indigo Blaze is set to drop their debut EP, UTB, later this year on November 7th. Haven't heard of them before? If you're a fan of Limp Bizkit, Beastie Boys, Silly Goose, or just good music in general, there is no better time to invest in your Indigo Blaze stocks than now. Personally, I discovered the band last year because one of their tracks, "CRITICAL HIT" played on Spotify as a recommended song, and the rest is history. One listen, and I was hooked. I'm not alone in feeling this way, because this song won the 2025 award for the Western Australia Music Heavy Song of the Year.
Here is an opportunity for the same thing to happen to you. Indigo Blaze have just dropped a new track called "DEFCON", a true testament that the future of nu metal is in great hands. While of course the nu legends such as Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne, and Deftones are still going strong, up and coming bands are proving that nu metal isn't just a trend and it's not going anywhere. Not shy about hiding their influences, Indigo Blaze blends the heavy guitar riffs and hip-hop drums of Limp Bizkit with the playfulness in the vocal stylings of Beastie Boys. However, they add their own unique Australian touch and personality in a way that conveys their music as something new and fresh.
The band's heaviest track to date, "DEFCON" immediately opens up with some sick turntable scratching before kicking into a nasty guitar riff. Next, vocalist Rhys Gahan gets his time to shine and show off his catchy rhymes with very well-timed vocal flow. The chorus does a wonderful job of getting stuck on repeat in your brain, and if one thing the drums on an Indigo Blaze song is going to do, it's make you bang your head. Of course, it wouldn't be a nu metal song if there wasn't a spotlight for some delicious groovy basslines. This track showcases the talents of each member in an exceptional manner. Combined with lyrics about believing in yourself and fighting back as the underdog, this song is a great display of who Indigo Blaze is and what they're all about.
