Mudvayne are on their way back onto the metal scene, and two years out from their initial reunion after over a decade apart, touring and festival appearances, and recently signing with Alchemy Recordings for their upcoming sixth LP, the prog-leaning Peorians haven't missed a beat. On the subject of said beat, Alesis Drums released the last of their "Backstage" series on YouTube, with their subject being drummer Matt McDonough.
The performance, taken from one of the band's recent festival dates, is of the L.D. 50 cut "Internal Primates Forever," one of the more technical and progressive cuts from the band's debut. McDonough shows off his skills on a hybrid kit, boasting both acoustic and electric elements. His double kicks are a controlled frenzy, punctuated by the bass guitar of the incredibly underrated Ryan Martinie, and in turn his percussion highlights the aggressive of Greg Tribbett's guitar work and Chad Gray's growls.
It's also just nice to see one of the B-sides from the band's catalog get some love, especially given the popularity of its compatriots "Dig" and "Death Blooms."
