Muse Dabbles With 8-String Guitars On "Unravelling"

Metalcore, djent, and EDM all in a blender results in this concoction.

In terms of modern heavy music, extended-range guitars are rather commonplace, after their advent in the late Eighties and popularization by acts like Korn in the Nineties. With acts like Sleep Token breaking the mold and bringing the low end to the mainstream, there are an increasing number of bands playing around with newer, heavier sounds. The latest to do so is Muse, with their anthemic new track "Unravelling."

The alt-rock stalwarts known for songs like "Knights of Cydonia" and "Hysteria" are no strangers to keeping things kinetic, but hearing low tones on guitar is not something terribly familiar to their usual sound. From the orchestration on the chorus to the sweet synths of the verses, the song runs a gauntlet of genres even before taking the eight-string guitars into the equation. Such a progressive nature from a big-ticket act like Muse is great to see, as well as a testament to their ability to evolve over the last two decades and change.

The song marks their first new cut since their 2022 LP Will of the People. Dan Lancaster, whose resume includes bands such as Slipknot and Bring Me The Horizon, co-wrote and produced the song, which may predicate a heavier sound for what comes next. In any case, "Unravelling" is a banger and a dense cut from a band that has never shyed away from experimenation.
