Puscifer have just announced their fifth studio album, Normal Isn’t. Following the album's February 6th release, the band will embark on a North American tour. In conjunction with the announcement, the band has released the music video for the first single, "Self Evident."
Though it's Puscifer's first record of new music since 2020's Existential Reckoning, the band has kept busy in the intervening years. Last year saw the release of "The Algorithm" for the American Psycho comic book soundtrack and a series of shows celebrating Maynard James Keenan's 60th birthday. This past July they released the career retrospective In Case You Were Napping.
Keenan sheds light on what fans can expect from the new album:
"We're definitely leaning into our early influences. It's the place where goth meets punk. It's where I came from."
Co-vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Carina Round adds,
"Instead of just saying, 'I want this to sound like Fleetwood Mac on cocaine if they had a baby with PJ Harvey,' Maynard was showing us his intention, which was really cool. In Puscifer, any idea can totally change without any preciousness, and everybody is on board – not unlike an insane asylum. We found each other because we’re demented in a symbiotic way."
Bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Mat Mitchell, who co-produced the record, describes its recording process:
"From the outset, we had discussed an element of rawness and edge, which guitar brings. We got rid of the guard rails and made the music more aggressive."
Normal Isn't also features contributions from Greg Edwards (bass) and Gunnar Olsen (drums), and Sarah Jones (drums) as well as guest appearances from Tool drummer Danny Carey, bass legend Tony Levin, and Ian (father of Atticus) Ross.
Artist ticket pre-sale starts Wednesday, October 22nd, at 10am local time using promo code PSC26 via Ticketmaster. General tickets go on sale Friday, October 24th at 10 a.m. local time.
The music video for "Self Evident," directed by the aforementioned Mitchell and María Aceves Diego, was filmed at a special concert at Exchange L.A. where the band previewed the entire album.
