I don't know how to critically evaluate new Cheem songs for two reasons one is that they're all great and two I hold this band to an incredibly high standard. It's like someone emailed me the new Beatles song and it's 1965. With that being said here is "Freeze Tag," it's great.
What endears me the most to Cheem it's that they care a lot. This is not a band tossing off algorithm bait, these are serious songwriters. Expectedly "Freeze Tag" sounds little like what they've done until this point. It surges on a math-y stop-start instrumental of incredible technical accuracy. Sam Nazz sings his fucking face off with a melody that lesser bands would kill to come up with but only Cheem would have the audacity to inject a spirited rap breakdown courtesy of Skye Holden into. Then, just like that, it's over. In lieu of a more conventional finale it cuts before teasing a quiet jazz lounge bit that suggests these guys absolutely could be casually chucking lo-fi beats to study to onto Spotify if they wanted. Pray they never do, we need them.
They've also got some new tour dates scheduled. Am I going to fly to Texas so I can see them in Houston, Austin, and Fort Worth? Maybe? How far of a drive is it between those cities Texas can't be that big right?
