Linkin Park are in the midst of their world tour, as the recently reformed band close in on one full year since their reunion. As part of their tour, along with the release of the deluxe edition of From Zero, the band kicked off the finals of the UEFA Champions League with a six-minute medley of their biggest songs, complete with choreographed dancers, flags, branded ponchos, and even a black-metal style logo designed and worn by co-vocalist/guitarist Mike Shinoda.
The performance included "The Emptiness Machine," "In The End," "Numb/Encore," "Up From The Bottom," and "Heavy is the Crown." Fans have commented on the fact that the latter of the lineup has become a modern sports anthem, as it first began as a song for the League of Legends animated series Arcane, as well as the theme for the game's 2024 World Championship.
Not everyone was a fan of the performance, however, as Dutch football legend Marco van Basten slammed the performance online, saying to Ziggo Sports (transcription by Metal Sucks):
“The Linkin Park performance was garbage, absolutely garbage. It’s a disgrace that UEFA allows this. I find it absolutely idiotic… Worthless, totally worthless.”
He would go on to add that his comments had less to do with the band and more to do with the fact that the broadcast even had a performance of any kind, claiming that it could serve as a distraction for the players. Does this mean that the "Swan of Utrecht" van Basten is a diehard Chester Bennington guy? Or was he backpedaling because he couldn't help but break the habit? In either case, the performance was a fun time.
