Last fall Moodring stormed back onto the scene with "Half Life" and now, with their forthcoming album, Death Fetish, just two weeks away, they've released the music video for the fifth single, "Gunplay (Suicidal 3way)." With this new track, the band prove adept at exploring and reconfiguring their influences into something cohesive that still has the ability to surprise. Note how the band plays with space in the verses, or how the electronic flourish in the left channel keeps the mood on edge.
After two years away, prompted by health issues that led to lead singer/guitarist Hunter Young stepping back from touring indefinitely, Moodring hasn't lost a step. If anything, being able to focus on the project a primarily a studio creation has emboldened the four-piece, allowing them to take their experimentation further. This more polished, more detailed take on the band's sound help to underline the roiling, warring emotions in Young's lyrics.
I swallow all of the pain / To hide the man I betray / What if a bullet ricochets? / Suicidal three way
The dark, disorienting music video—directed, shot, and edited by Olli Appleyard (Static Dress)—is a nightmare amalgamation of Korn's groundbreaking "Freak On A Leash," Nine Inch Nails' "Pinion," and Deftones' "Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)." If the influences aren't subtle, that hardly matters when the effect is so bracing and in service of the song. Check out the music video below.
Death Fetish releases on March 27th via SharpTone Records. You can preorder the record here.
