Just weeks ago, world-famous free soloist Alex Honnold made it all the way to the top of 1,667 ft (508m) tall skyscraper Taipei 101 with assistance from an unlikely source: the band Tool. Shortly after his climb, documented live on the Netflix special Skyscraper Live, Honnold explained the practical uses of the influential alt-metal veterans' catalog. Word soon made it to the band's frontman, Maynard James Keenan (A Perfect Circle, Puscifer).
"Not everybody and their mother texted me every three seconds telling me about it or anything," Keenan joked in an interview with ABC Audio. Keenan reacted to hearing about Honnold's record-setting feat with, "Jesus, what balls." "What the heck were you thinking, dude?" exclaimed the singer/vintner/entrepreneur. He continued, "It's impressive! It's extremely impressive, but, I mean, I wouldn't make it past the first floor. I would fall to my death." Keenan quickly shot down any notion of partaking in Honnold's future climbs: "I'll be the guy down below eating french fries making fun of him."
Honnold eventually shared his death-defying soundtrack which kicks off with—you guessed it—"Forty-Six & Two," and includes tracks from Lateralus and the band's most recent album, Fear Inoculum. Conspicuously absent were tracks from Tool's Grammy-nominated 2006 album 10,000 Days. The man couldn't make room for "The Pot"? Maybe his brain really is wired differently. The hard-hitting playlist, shared on Spotify, also includes selections from Chevelle, Linkin Park, Nothing More, The Offspring, Senses Fail, and The Used.
Fans of Keenan's bands Tool and Puscifer have plenty to look forward to in the coming months. Puscifer's new album, Normal Isn't, is out now along with the first issue of the band's graphic novel, Tales from the Pusciverse. Wrestling fans can enjoy Tool guitarist Adam Jones's recent contributions to the sport while, starting in June, old school prog fans can catch Tool drummer Danny Carey performing King Crimson's 80's catalog live across Europe as part of BEAT along with Steve Vai, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew. Tickets available here. Puscifer kick off their North American tour in March, and the following month Tool will reconvene to play Sonic Temple before embarking on their own North American tour in the fall.
