Grammy-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz has helped shape modern rock and metal, having worked with bands like Deftones, Korn, Evanescence, Mastodon, and Foo Fighters, just to name a few. Now, the Nashville-based producer is launching his own record label, Hiss Recordings. Raskulinecz, in an interview with Revolver, described what he hopes to achieve with the new label:
The mission is to record great songs and have a shitload of fun doing it!
Following the July release of "Bonfire," Raskulinecz's solo debut recorded with Korn drummer Ray Luzier and Big Wreck lead singer/guitarist Ian Thornley, he's looking to give the label a proper launch with "Static Planet"/"Crowbar," a two-song digital single from DOOM MUTUAL. The band, comprised of Daphne Browdy and David Gestiehr, is an up-and-coming band from the Nashville scene that caught Raskulinecz's attention:
They have a really cool sound that needs to be heard! I think people will really dig what they are about. Super creative, and they have a great sound that’s different from what’s happening now.
Hiss Recordings is the latest example of a high-profile producer looking to create a more artist-friendly label, following in the footsteps of Howard Benson (P.O.D., Hoobastank, My Chemical Romance) and Neil Sanderson's (Three Days Grace) Judge & Jury Records. But what sets this new label apart is its focus on releasing singles and 7-inches. The decision to release 7-inch vinyls was spurred by Raskulinecz's love of collecting vinyls from an early age and the recent renewed interest in physical media among younger listeners.
The heavy, woozy "Static Planet" finds DOOM MUTUAL channeling 90s alt-rock and shoegaze with a modern melodic touch. With its dual vocals and warped My Bloody Valentine-inspired dissonance, the track achieves a potent sense of melancholy. Between it and the poppier, more melodic "Crowbar," DOOM MUTUAL have the makings of an American alt-rock answer to The Raveonettes.
The duo put out a joint statement about "Static Planet," which just got a music video:
'Static Planet' captures the feeling of watching your life happen through a layer of interference. It’s about searching for connection in a world that feels distant and artificial. We wanted the music to feel like a blanket of sound — massive and overwhelming — like trying to find a signal through endless noise.
DOOM MUTUAL have no upcoming dates, but that likely won't be the case for long. Meanwhile, Raskulinecz is already hard at work signing and recording other up-and-coming artists to build out Hiss Recordings' roster.
