After fifteen years, Grammy-winning guitar maverick and activist Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Prophets of Rage) is making his return to the world of comics. He's teaming up with writer/producer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Legends of Tommorow, Tales of Arcadia), artist Szymon Kudrański (Spawn, Punisher, No Man's Land), and letterer DC Hopkins (Nocterra, Justice League Infinity, Chopped: Cannibal Edition) for Leviathan Freedom, a sci-fi spin on the true story of Robert Smalls.
Born into slavery, Smalls commandeered a Confederate transport and sailed it into Union waters, eventually freeing himself, his crew, and their families. His story helped persuade Abraham Lincoln to allow African American soldiers to fight for Union army.
Morello, whose first foray into comics was 2011's Orchid, had this to say:
For as long as I can remember, I've been on a mission to unearth the stories of revolutionaries — the fighters, the visionaries, the ones history either buries or sanitizes beyond recognition. Their courage, defiance, and unwavering pursuit of justice, often in the face of seemingly impossible odds, have shaped the world, even if their names are too often left out of the narrative. Robert Smalls is one of those heroes. The idea of taking his revolutionary spirit and launching it into the cosmos feels like a perfect extension of his fight.
Guggenheim adds:
Leviathan Freedom comes as a reminder that true freedom is rarely given and very often must be taken.
The five-issue mini-series event from arrives courtesy of Amazon's Comixology Originals exclusive digital content line and is set for release this summer.
Right now, fans can catch Morello with rock legends Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band on their Land of Hope & Dreams American Tour and starting in June, he'll tour Europe with his Electric Full Band Show. In July and September, he can be seen at the Newport Folk Festival and Louder Than Life.
