Poppy has never been afraid to get dark. Or heavy, for that matter. Still, this latest offering from her album Empty Hands really shows how far she can go. Entitled "Dying To Forget," this new single is easily one of the hardest-hitting things the genre-bending songstress has put to tape. Assisting her in the metalcore onslaught are guitarists Stephen Harrison and Isaac Hale from House Of Protection and Knocked Loose, respectively. Harrison co-wrote several Empty Hands tracks, and Hale previously worked with Poppy when she guested on Knocked Loose's Grammy-nominated breakout hit "Suffocate."
When we last heard from Poppy, it was on the surprisingly faithful cover of Alanis Morissette's "Hand In Pocket" for the Mile End Kicks soundtrack. This latest stylistic turn finds her ditching the melodicism that distinguished earlier singles "Guardian" and "Time Will Tell" for something much harsher. Aided by Harrison and Hale, the entire track is a torrent of sustained rage. Jackhammer riffs collide as she effortlessly slips between sweet, soaring harmonies and ferocious, throat-shredding screams.
Lyrically, the track is even more cutthroat as she alludes to past abuses at the hands of Ghostemane (aka Eric Whitney) and Titanic Sinclair (aka Corey Michael Mixter), past collaborators who, for a time, each dated Poppy. Her penchant for wordplay is in full display as she turns their own words against them in the track's vicious chorus and outro. A clear standout from Empty Hands, this track shows the breakthrough of 2024's Negative Spaces was no fluke.
When the guilt follows you out / My idle hands will let you drown / My patience wielded down / Born a quitter, so you weren't worth saving
Starting next month, fans can catch Poppy live with special guests LANDMVRKS and Thousand Below on her Constantly Nowhere Tour. In September she, along with K.Flay and Nova Twins, will support nu metal legends Evanescence on their world tour. Meanwhile, Knocked Loose are in the midst of their Suffer In The Hive Mind Tour, which includes headliners, festival stops, and shows supporting the mighty Metallica. Starting in September, the band will hit the road with rapper Denzel Curry and special guests Superhaven and Boundaries.
