Puscifer have released "ImpetuoUs," the third single from their new album, Normal Isn't. The visualizer for the track, drawn by Marlin Shoop and animated by Raul Araujo, offers fans their first glimpse into Tales from the Pusciverse, the band's upcoming graphic novel. If the contents of the video seem familiar it's because it's a redux of the podcast "interview" Maynard James "MJ" Keenan (Tool) did with his alter ego, Bellendia Black, featured in the director's cut of the music video for "Pendulum." While the EC Comics-inspired artwork is well done, the visualizer can't help but feel like a retread. Further details about the graphic novel—and, presumably, its relation Normal Isn't—will be released soon.
Fortunately, the actual song stands well enough on its own. Over a lively drum pattern, warm bass, buzzing synths, and stabs of distorted guitar, Keenan calls out to the loners and misfits with a simple plea "Let's just dance." More energetic than the preceding singles, the band interplay makes "ImpetuoUs" feel like more than the sum of its parts. Dark, but brimming with heat, it's easily the most exciting of the album's three singles.
And yet, it seems even Puscifer aren't exactly sure what to make of this track. In an official statement Keenan professed,
I’m looking forward to hearing where this song takes people. As the writers, we forget that in a way, we are carpenters and that we’ve been with this song since it was a pile of lumber. Our Perspective may differ from the final occupant of this space we’ve constructed. Shelter, Bridge or Gallows, Coffin? Curious to find out.
The band's North American tour kicks off March 20th in Las Vegas. Check out the visualizer/podcast/graphic novel preview below.
Normal Isn't comes out on February 6th via Puscifer Entertainment/Alchemy Recordings/BMG.
