In this uncomfortable and logic-defying time we're all living in, sometimes the criticism and lampooning of the so-called American experiment as performed by late-night television hosts is the most comfortable way to stay informed. Last Week Tonight on HBO recently tackled the immigration enforcement and ICE raids encouraged and celebrated by the current administration, and while the examination was both informative and entertaining, I don't know that any of us expected name of one redneck fucker from Jacksonville to be brought up.
In discussing the Trump administration's stance on immigration reform, as well as the goal of one million deportations in a year, host John Oliver highlighted the horrors of these ICE raids by recounting the tale of Enrique the ice cream man, a vendor in California who was whisked off the the street by ICE before he could really comprehend what had happened. Of all of the people to be concerned about, I'm willing to guess that Enrique posed as much threat to the fabric of society as a crumb from a potato chip.
Oliver then went on to talk about the goal that was ICE's attempt at one million deportations in this calendar year, a goal which they are falling very short of. He likened the situation to the hypothetical detainment of the Limp Bizkit frontman with the following:
"... and they have backed themselves into this corner. Because promising to deport a million criminal migrants is one thing, but once you're in charge, you then have to find that many of them, which is going to be hard if they don't exist in the numbers that you are claiming, which they don't. It's like promising to apprehend ten thousand Fred Dursts a day: there just aren't that many out there. So either you have to admit that your target number was bullshit in the first place, or you have to drastically widen your definition of what a Fred Durst is, until you're eventually arresting any Gen X-er with a hat."
