Drumeo's YouTube channel has seen plenty of "fish out of water" moments with one of their flagship series, in which musicians come in, hear a song with the drum track taken out, and then take full creative liberty to make their own drum parts.
In the most recent episode, EDM chart-topper Zedd is assigned "Cowboys From Hell" by Pantera, off the band's 1990 studio album of the same name. Turns out the producer has a background in percussion that predates his time making hits for artists such as Ariana Grande, Alessia Cara, and Maren Morris.
Vinnie Paul though he may not be, Zedd's take on the drums is honestly solid, at least until the double-time outro, which takes him a handful of takes to compose a solid part for. His use of double kicks does emanate techniques from System of a Down's John Dolmayan, in which the kick accentuates the open notes on the bass guitar, which are themselves doubled by the lead guitar.
Admittedly, an EDM producer playing a groove metal staple isn't quite as far-fetched when you break it down, but it's still entertaining to see the process Zedd takes to get there. He even gets the stamp of approval from Charlie Benante, who has succeeded Vinnie Paul on the drums in Pantera in their modern, reunited line-up.
