In this latest installment of "wait, what the fuck?" footage of former American Idol winner and Diamond-certified country artist Carrie Underwood has surfaced in a red cap, and it's not the one you would expect given that she performed at the second Trump inauguration. In Dyersville, IA at the Velocity Fest, Underwood broke out a series of covers of alternative classics, including "Shine" by Collective Soul, "Scars" by Papa Roach, "One Step Closer" by Linkin Park, and "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit.
It's like seeing a gas gauge slowly creep from E to F, only it's "totally expected" to "we've lost the plot." "Shine" is on classic rock radio stations, which is only upsetting if you're around the age of that song, which released in 1993. "Scars" is a bit less of a stretch, given that Underwood partnered with Papa Roach for "Leave A Light On (Talk Away The Dark)" in 2023. "One Step Closer" is one of LP's best-known songs, and while it wouldn't be my first pick for a country girl to take on, it's not totally out of left field.
On that note, it's worth mentioning that Dyersville, IA is the city where Field of Dreams was filmed, in case the name rings a bell.
Sadly, Underwood censored herself during the latter, letting the crowd sing all of the fucks in the fucked-up rhyme from Limp Bizkit.
Let's also take stock of this: she covered Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit in Iowa. That's three pillars of nu metal in one fell swoop. This is far from the first time that a country artist has gone nu in any respect, but it's just jarring to see someone with a (relatively) squeaky-clean image like Carrie take on Limp fucking Bizkit.
