Filmmaker Matt Zane Receives Cease and Desist From Wayne Static Estate

The families of Static and Wray threaten legal action over the production of an unauthorized documentary.

Matt Zane with Wayne Static and Tera Wray

Director Matt Zane had begun working on a joint project documenting the lives of Static-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray before Static's untimely death in 2014. All progress had come to a halt, until now. Zane revealed his plans to continue the work he had started all those years ago, with the focus being the couple's relationship. However, he had also mentioned that he planned to release some of the last music that Static had recorded outside of Static-X before his passing.

This announcement sparked the ire of the families of Static and Wray, who issued a joint statement condemning the production of this documentary and urging Zane to reconsider. He responded with a refusal to back down, and he even begun a crowdfunding campaign to support his efforts. The aim of this documentary is to focus on Static and Wray, rather than Static-X, so Zane wants to tell their story the way that they intended to over a decade ago. He believes that he owes the completion of this project to his longtime friends, who had recruited him to begin the documentary in the first place.

As a result, the estate of Wayne Static has now issued a cease and desist to Matt Zane in an attempt to stop the production. If anything, the backlash to the documentary has seemed to motivate the filmmaker to persevere through the roadblocks. He is bound and determined to release this project if it is the last thing he does. Even if it goes against the wishes of the families of his deceased friends.

Zane has posted an update to his Twitter/X account. He explains that his goal is to showcase their relationship in an objective light, and promises that he will march forward no matter how long it takes.
