The Callous Daoboys' Carson Pace Calls Out KimDracula Over Potential Stolen Breakdown

Yesterday (July 22nd), KimDracula announced their comeback with "Molecular Conversion," their first single as a part of the Rise Records family. The genre-agnostic artist has since come under fire from The Callous Daoboys, in particular frontman Carson Pace, for a potential stolen breakdown from the Daoboys' latest effort "Gigantic Parasitic Tongue."

In a screen-recorded clip, the similarity between the two breakdowns can be heard below, in a tweet with the caption:

Cool breakdown @kimdrac glad you liked the song lol

Pace would later go on to give credit for the finding, tweeting:

Mike Recon informed me of this, my goat never stops being Chief Detective of the Breakdown Crimes Unit

It's tricky territory, as there are similarities in the colloquially-dubbed "panic chords" in both tracks. This is a technique used often in any -core music, but putting it in the same key of C doesn't help KimDracula's case. Fans are divided on the potential reheating of the proverbial nachos, but it doesn't particularly look good for the Tasmanian artist, particularly when this track is meant to mark a new era.

This could also be an instance of cryptomnesia, or “the belief that a thought is novel when in fact it is a memory," as defined by Robert T. Kellogg in his 1994 work The Psychology of Writing. In so many words, it is accidental plagiarism, and is not new to music. In 1970, George Harrison of The Beatles was found to have infringed on a copyright held by Bright Tunes for the 1964 Chiffons song "He's So Fine" on his own track "My Sweet Lord." The courts ruled against Harrison, despite his ardent opposition to the charges, and would go on to rebuke any guilt about the incident, citing that his song had saved lives.

Whether or not KimDracula or The Callous Daoboys have saved or will save lives is not the argument here, but rather whether or not there was actual plagiarism at work here, accidental or otherwise. For what it's worth, KimDracula has not made a statement at this time, so stay tuned for more, as this story is developing.
